Why does forced marriage happen?
The family are worried about their reputation, or that an individual will bring shame on the family if they do not marry who they do not want to,
It could be that they don’t approve of their child being lesbian, gay, bi or transgender. Or simply that the community will disapprove of them for not arranging a marriage.
Think it’s an important part of their culture
They may feel they are going against their religion and culture by not forcing someone to marry.
Pressured by members of the community
If their community believe it is the right thing to do, this can be an overwhelming pressure on a family.
A family may receive financial support if they arrange a marriage.
